It was in 1889 in the period of the Presidency of Benjamin Harrison that the tradition of decorating Christmas tree in White House first began. The two grandchildren of President Harrison started this, when they gathered the whole family to the Oval Room of White House, where they had decorated the Christmas tree with candles. This was actually a very private family celebration of Christmas but since then and over the years this has generated a national interest in the tradition of decorating the Christmas trees by the First Families during Christmas.
The decoration of the tree is said to reflect the tastes of the individual First Lady. In 1961, the then First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy decorated the Christmas tree by incorporating the trimmings of toy from the Nutcracker Suite Ballet by Tchaikovsky. The present First Lady Laura Bush choose the theme of “Home For Holidays” and with the help of miniature family homes of all the Presidents of United States for decorating the Christmas tree. The honor of pressing the button and lighting the Christmas tree, however, goes to the President himself and this tradition has remained unbroken for years together.
