Though the book, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever authored by Barbara Robinson is often regarded as essential kids read, a little thought and effort to delve into the matter would probably reveal its true essence. The story is quite a hot favorite and has also been made into a TV Serial.

The story revolves around the Herdmans, the six unruly kids who are supposedly the worst kids in the history of the world
.
The weave of the story runs round the adventures and activities of these kids and explicitly deals with the whole lot of childhood crimes (which are actually naughtiness of the highest order) and misdeeds that they commit. Their deeds and actions are unpardonable and range from stealing, lying, cursing, to setting buildings on fire. But the dramatic twists in the story happens when they take over the church and participate in the parish Christmas pageant, quite an unimaginable feat to believe. To top it off they also join the Sunday school.
Everyone in town is absolutely terrified, when they stumble upon the fact that Ralph has been entrusted with the role of Joseph, Imogene as Mary, the younger boys as Wise men and Herod, and Gladys as the Angel of the Lord. But much to the amazement of the town people, Herdmans lend a meaningful touch to the play and in the course of acting they rediscover the very essence of Christmas and what Jesus really stood for.
This is an excellent read and a must during the holiday season. It has been exhibited in the form of a narration by a stunned parish-member, C.J Critt. Video Copies and books are available in the public libraries. You could order them online, as they would serve as excellent Christmas showers.
