This is a unique and entertaining spin on an age-old tale. The writing is fast-paced, engaging, and humorous. However, some believe that the story takes liberties with sacred ground. Also, because the story centers on a popular Christian childhood event, some of the meaning and irony may be lost on readers who are unfamiliar with Christmas pageants. But the universal humor and underlying meaning is appreciable. Written from a child's point of view, the language is vivid and imaginative. The main characters model outlandishly horrible behavior. Historic details of the Christmas story are efficiently captured in the screenplay. By using her voice, the author makes each character come alive. While the pacing of the narration is at times fast, the pauses, periods and paragraphs are longer than normally heard in general conversation.
Meet the Herdman’s six awful kids and one stressed-out cat, all prone to mischief of the worst kind. They attend Sunday school only because they think of eating cake there. Once Christmas pageant plans begin, they intimidate other children into letting them volunteer for the biggest parts. When the town reacts with horror to the news that the most sinful children will be playing the holiest roles, the pageant director becomes even more determined to make it work. Even though they hardly resemble Bible figures, the Herdmans don’t ruin the pageant; they improve it, and give the story a surprisingly sentimental ending. Check out
