History of the Decoration of Christmas

History of the decoration of Christmas arose from the intermingling of Pagan culture and the newborn Christian religion. Seasonal celebrations in the ancient times were held during the Winter Solstice. Evergreens were used by various nationalities like the Egyptians,Romans, Druids and the Anglo Saxons.

The tradition of decorating trees during Christmas was inherited from them. According to the records in the History of the decoration of Christmas the earliest decorated Christmas tree appeared in Germany in 1605.

During the Middle Ages Christmas trees were symbolized as Paradise Trees in the Garden of Eden. Early ornaments were usually handcrafted or edible. Nuts, candies, fruits and tiny wafers were used largely for decoration.

In 1840, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of England popularized the tradition of Christmas tree decoration by displaying a lavishly embellished tree in their palace. Almonds, candles, beads, tinsels, glass ornaments and snowflakes were the choicest items.

According to the history of the decoration of Christmas, the Christmas trees arrived in America in the later part of the 19th Century, when the influx of Germany and Irish undermined the Puritan legacy. The Christmas ornaments were exported from Germany. In the 1930s, there was a sharp decline in the tree decorations due to the World War II. Plastic became a popular resource for decoration. Glass balls and lametta conferred an elegant look to the trees.

In 1882, Thomas Edison's assistant Edward Johnson developed the idea of Christmas tree lights that ran on electricity. This innovation made outdoor Christmas tree lights possible.
