History of Christmas in America

The History of Christmas in America goes back to the Beginning of the 17th century when Oliver Cromwell along with his Puritan forces banned the festival of Christmas in 1645.So Charles II plays an important role in the History of Christmas in America, as it is with his restoration to the throne of England that the Christmas festival was restituted
In the History of Christmas the American Revolution has played a major part. There was a lot of turmoil during this period as a result of which many festivals died out without any recognition, including Christmas. It was only after the Congress came in session, in December 25, 1789,that the Americans began to celebrate Christmas.25th December 1789 is considered to be the first day when Christmas was celebrated in America. But until June 26, 1870 Christmas was not regarded as a federal holiday. Therefore the people of America were not able to associate themselves completely with Christmas. From 19th century onwards the American people began to celebrate Christmas with pomp and vigor. The Citizens of America transformed this Festival of Christmas from a one day Celebration to a weeklong or month long celebration.

Children’s books helped in spreading the customs and traditions associated with Christmas all over America. Women’s magazines gave suggestions on the various ways of decorating a Christmas tree or a house. By the last quarter of the 19th century, the inhabitants of America took part in every aspect of Christmas, whether it was singing carols or making cookies or other dishes, or decoration.Christmas Carnival offers information on the history of Christmas in America worldwide .
