History of Christmas Traditions

Celebration of Christmas involves adhering to a lot of traditions. Over the centuries these traditions have made a place in the hearts of the people and is today, akin to the religious rituals. The history of Christmas traditions tells us how the celebrations have
changed over the times. The first Christmas celebration was in 336 AD but a couple of centuries later, the church had a prayer service for the faithful.

If we go through the history of Christmas traditions we cannot overlook the Christmas tree. The custom originated in Germany in the sixteenth century. A cold and bleak winter chills the heart of many, especially when there is more than a month to endure it. Mistletoe trees are decorated with candles, stockings, poinsettias and other decorative articles. They are evergreen trees and a green tree in the midst of white winter definitely brings a smile on every face. Holly is placed over the doorway with the belief that it will drive away all evils. Santa Claus arriving, laden with gifts for children, is another endearing piece of tradition. Santa Claus has originated from the legends connected with the Saint Nicholas who was a fourth century Christian bishop in present day Turkey.

If we look at the history of Christmas traditions we find that the Christmas dinner has a special place amongst all the festivities. Traditional Christmas dinner must include roast turkey and Christmas pudding. Exchange of gifts and superb Christmas cards, hanging stockings beside the bed with the hope that it will be full of gifts next morning, collecting money for the poor in clay boxes and a special prayer to remember the Lord are now inextricable parts of Christmas.
