festivities. The same goes for Advent wreaths. The German Lutherans started this custom but today the wreath is an integral part of any home celebrating Christmas. The Germans celebrate Christmas in a very elaborate way. Gifts are given on December Sixth (St. Nicholas Day) and the Christmas Eve.
Jamaica is a tapestry of different cultures. The differentiating factor is the food. Jamaicans marinate mixed fruit in wine for months and then bake the Christmas cake with it. Christmas dinner is a delight. Roast chicken, beef or duck, curried goat, oxtails form a part of the menu. The other customs and rituals are the same as any other country.
Ireland has some interesting customs. The Irish light a candle in the window and keep a table laden with caraway and raisin filled bread and a pitcher of milk. The outhouses and stores are white washed with the belief that it will ward off the evil. In the Far East the countries like Singapore and Philippines celebrate Christmas with gusto. In Singapore, delicacies like frog legs in ginger are prepared. Australia has Christmas in the height of summer. Therefore some of the customs differ.
