|
Bells in general have had multiple usages since ancient past. Since time immemorial, bells were used to scare off evil spirits during the dark winter months.
They were the most popular forms of musical instruments and the most inexpensive too. They were primarily rung to signal the arrival of a New Year, as a warning

during wartime or merely to gather people for an important announcement. But the reason for the bells tolling during the winter months has undergone a revolutionary change and in the recent past the bells tinkle to announce the arrival of the season, to proclaim the birth of Christ.
Bells as noisemakers and their ancient forms and usages can be traced back to archaic pagan traditions. There is hardly anyone who is unaware of the common saying, "Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings"- a catch phrase from the great movie, "It's a Wonderful Life".
Christmas bells and their significance are shrouded in mystery. But there is no denying of the fact that, its origins are not purely Christian though in course of time it was incorporated in the Christian traditions. Another myth refers to Bells that Santa ties round the neck of reindeers, which helps him to spot them in the dark foggy nights.
Everything apart, who can forget the historic poem by Henry Wordsworth Longfellow (written around 1860's), which was later, made into a Christmas hymn titled, "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" which dealt with the tragedy one had to go through during the Civil War.
Thus on a lighter note, Christmas would seem way too bland without Christmas bells as they are one such things who's relevance would never wane by the ages.
