Tim Burton's The Nightmare before Christmas soundtrack features 10 ghoulishly delightful songs and score by composer/songwriter Danny Elfman, the lead singer of the popular rock group Oingo Boingo. Elfman creates a musical landscape embracing the traditional musical structure in which the story narrative is wholly integrated into each number. Allowing the film's characters to come convincingly to life, the songs set into motion the fanciful tale of Jack Skellington with haunting melodies, vivid imagery, and spectacular wordplay. Supported by an evocative and suspenseful underscore, the Nightmare before Christmas soundtrack is a dazzling combination of music and innovative technique.
“This Is Halloween” introduces the storyline; in “Jack's Lament” Jack is frustrated with his life; “What's this?” is Jack's testimonial to Christmas-town; “Town Meeting Song” introduces the denizens of Halloween-town; “Jack's Obsession” makes Jack realize his newfound desire for Christmas; “Kidnap the Sandy Claws” unveils Lock, Shock, and Barrel's plan to abduct Santa Claus; ‘Making Christmas” is Halloween-town's impression of Christmas; “Sally's Song” is a tender ballad of unrequited love; “Oogie Boogie's Song” is the evil demon's ghoulish tribute to himself; “Poor Jack” is a song of self-awakening, in which Jack discovers he truly belongs in Halloween-town; and the finale reprise performed by Jack, Sally, and the citizens of Halloween-town.
Nightmare is a wonderfully original and darkly humorous vision from the mind of Tim Burton, director of Batman. As strong as the story and the music are, both come together to form one complete, unified work with a consistent tone and feeling.
