Clay Christmas Ornaments

By - Debbie Haren

Materials:

  • 1-cup cornstarch
  • 1pound of baking sod
  • 1 1/2 cups of water
  • Stove
  • Cookie cutters
  • Paints
  • Bowl
  • Spoon
  • Oven safe flat pan
  • Straw
Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.
  • Place the dough on a table or flat surface and press cookie cutters in the dough.
  • Gently peel the excess dough away from the design in the dough and place it on the pan.
  • Grease pan with butter before placing any ornaments on it so they do not stick to the pan.
  • After all the ornaments are made take a pencil or straw and poke a hole in the top of the ornament so it can hung on the tree.
  • Put in the oven for a few minutes to harden the clay. If desired after baking in the oven use polyurethane to spray on the ornament to keep them together and to make them last longer.
  • Wait one day after they have been baked and/or sprayed with polyurethane and then paint the ornaments.
  • After the ornaments have been painted and have dried pick a colored ribbon and tie through the hole at the top and hang on the Christmas tree.
  • If no ribbon is available just use a metal ornament hanger to hang it up with.
  • Also it really looks neat if you sprinkle glitter on the ornaments before you bake them in the oven. It just gives them a little extra sparkle.
  • Of course do not forget you can also decorate with wiggly eyes and pom pom's instead of just paint.
  • By all means if you not the crafty type still do this with your family because it is so much fun and the ornaments last a lifetime!!
