Feast of Saint Valentine is celebrated every year on the 14th of February. The saint lived in Rome and was known to help solemnise weddings that were banned by the mighty Roman Empire. He helped soldiers get married and was later imprisoned by the empire. According to popular legend when Saint Valentine was in jail he helped cure the jailers daughter. They say he gave her a note, “Your Valentine,” before he was hanged to death. That apparently was the first ‘Valentine Card’.
Ever since his death anniversary has come to be accepted as a day when lovers unite against all odds! Over the centuries several customs have been associated with this feast but the one that has stood the test of time is giving Valentine day gifts. In earlier times Valentine messages and cards were the accepted norm but with commercialization and passage of time fancy gifts have taken over.
It is widely believed that Saint Valentine would cut little red hearts and give them to soldiers who would go outside and fight wars. The idea was to remind these fighters that there were people back home who loved and wanted them back. In fact This may have been one reason why using little red hearts on this feast has become a custom.
