Valentine Day Poems

In the olden days when the concept of paper greetings did not exist, lovers sang versus for their partners. Romantic recitations and verse singing was very common. In the middle ages lovers are known to have composed poetry for their loved ones.

Written greetings came into vogue much later. People started making special cards for their valentine after the 1400’s. It was then that special compositions were thought of and penned on paper. These cards were decorated with cut outs of the sacred heart, cupids, angels and glitter. Some would go to lengths and decorate the edges with lace trimmings. Check out these popular valentine day poems:

“A Valentine,” by Edgar Allan Poe is among the greatest Valentine day poetry. Originally, the poem was called ‘To her whose name is written below.’ The verses were dedicated to one Frances Sargent Osgood.

Another famous poem is ‘Ode to a Naked Beauty,’ by Neruda

A few other well known valentine day poems include:

‘Love’s Philosophy,’ by Percy Bysshe Shelly
‘Love in Life,’ by Robert Browning
‘I Carry your heart with me,’ by E.E. Cummings
‘Love,’ by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
