Valentine’s Day has traditionally been observed on February 14th. According to popular legend the day is celebrated in the memory of Saint Valentine. The priest is known to have helped Roman soldiers tie the knot in secret.
Apparently the then Roman Emperor Claudius believed that young celibate men made the best warriors. And therefore he banned soldiers from getting married. It was Saint Valentine who went out of the way to help these young men. That is when he was executed by the emperor. The Church at that time wanted to honor him and therefore declared Feb 14 as St, Valentine’s Day!
Basically the valentine day message is all about spreading love, loyalty, togetherness and affection. Most valentine day poems reflect the very theme. The feast is not about giving presents, chocolates and gifts. The real message of Valentine seems to have been lost in the maze of commercialization. The feast is about encouraging true love and long term relationships based on trust and affection. The greatest of poets and scholars have written about the true message of love.
