Christmas In United Kingdom

Christmas in United Kingdom is celebrated with wild abandon for more than a thousand years. During the Cromwellian rule Christmas in United Kingdom was very discreet but later after the Restoration, Christmas was back with great gusto. The holiday season is ushered in with pealing church bells, choirs singing,
hand bells ringing and baskers and waits (originally watchmen) performing on street corners.

Christmas in United Kingdom sees many beautifully decorated Christmas trees. This tradition is not originally an English one, Queen Victoria’s German husband, Prince Albert introduced the Christmas tree in England in mid nineteenth century. Kissing boughs (mixture of evergreens and mistletoe) are quite common too. One of the nation’s well loved Christmas tree can be seen in the heart of London, near the statue of Lord Nelson in Trafalgar Square.

Christmas In United Kingdom is celebrated over two days, that is, the Christmas Eve and the 25th December. The children are wild with excitement on Christmas Eve as Santa Claus fills up the stockings with Christmas gifts. So the children leave mince pies and brandy for Father Christmas and a carrot for the reindeer. The churches reverberate with Christmas carols and hymns. Two carols are performed on Christmas Eve. The first is for the children and the second is held around mid night so that people can welcome and honor the birth of Lord Jesus.

After the Christmas church service the family sits down to the grand Christmas dinner. A traditional dinner has roast turkey and stuffings, roast potatoes and vegetables, bread sauce, cranberry sauce and gravy and Christmas pudding with brandy butter. Connect to Christmas Carnivals for more.
