Christmas In Albania

Albania is a southeastern country bordering the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea between the other European countries of Greece, Serbia and Montenegro. The country is not a predominantly Christian country, the Muslims make up a sizeable portion of the population.

Christmas in Albania is a family affair and it is very uncommon not to see the participation of the whole family in this winter festival.

Christmas in Albania is a time of great joy and merry making. Albanians respect family values very much. So each and every celebration is done in the presence of the whole family. Albanians decorate their houses and the exchange of gifts is common during Christmas. Mostly the Christmas cards, household goods and new clothes for the entire family make the bulk of the purchases in the Christmas season. But though Christmas in Albania is well celebrated, the New Year's Eve is the most celebrated day in the Albanian social calendar. The custom of gift giving is maintained on the New Year's Eve.

Christmas in Albania is never complete without the special Christmas meals. The grand Christmas feast is well loved and the efforts in the kitchen is well rewarded. The Stuffed turkey and other delicacies placed on the table “vanishes” in no time. And desert takes a special place. Albanians call it "bakllava" which in America is known as “baklavash”. It’s a type of pie which is quite delicious. Albanians also have their big and nicely decorated Christmas tree, in the center of the capital, Tirana. Stay connected to Christmas Carnivals.
