Origin of the 12 Days of Christmas

Christmas is celebrated worldwide on 25th December. At the time of the festival of Christmas friends and family spent happy times with each other. The feelings of joy and merriment can be associated with the festival of Christmas. The 12 days of Christmas are the 12 days between the birth of Jesus Christ (25th December) and the Epiphany (6th January).

The Origin of the 12 Days of Christmas is linked to the differences in calendars and church traditions.

26th December which is known as the Boxing Day or Stephen's day is regarded as the first day of Christmas. 27th December is considered to be the second day of Christmas and it continues in this manner until the 6th of January (Epiphany) that is the 12th Day or the last day of Christmas. Therefore it can be said that 25th December is not a part of the 12 Days of Christmas.

The Origin of the 12 Days of Christmas is linked to the Middle Ages to some extent as a lot of fun and festivity was associated with these 12days of Christmas in the Middle Ages that ended with the closing of the Christmas festival on 6th January. Instead of celebrating the Christmas festival for one day, it was celebrated for 12 Days at stretch and this tradition is prevalent till today.
