Memorial Day

Memorial Day in the United States of America is not merely another National Holiday. The day is solemn and very close to the American heart. It is on this day that all of America pays tribute to those who passed away during the Civil war that came to an end in May 1868. This war played an important role in the history of the United States, more people died in this conflict such that the administration had to set up America’s first ‘national cemeteries’.

It was three years after the war endedthat Maj. Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of Republic (GAR) declared the ‘Decoration Day’. The idea was to honor the graves of departed soldiers with fresh flowers. To remember and pray for them!

‘National moment of observance’

Though the Arlington Cemetery across the Potomac River is the official celebration venue, the day is observed with reverence across the states. In fact 3:00 PM local time is observed as a ‘National moment of observance’ all over the United States of America.

Memorial Day

The celebration was officially established in the year 1966. Initially the solemn event was observed on May 5each year. Over the years the event evolved into an occasion where people not just mourned the civil war heroes but those who died in the World Wars and other U.S. conflicts as well.

Memorial Day Parades

Special processions are organised by military veterans and other groups to mark the event across the United States. The annual memorial Day Parades in New York, Chicago and Washington are world famous.
