The concept of marriage is as old as the hills and so are the rituals, customs, and superstitions stemming from it. Besides being the oldest gem, pearls are thought to be sacred as it is one of the only gems, which are considered to be the symbol of pristine purity, fidelity, and togetherness by most of the ancient cultures dating back from the Romans down to the Egyptians and Greeks. Its sanctity stems from it being linked to Aphrodite, Greek goddess of love.
