Christmas is a special occasion in Prague and the Christmas markets, or Vanocni trh as they are called, are a key element in the Czech festive magic. The Prague Christmas markets bring visitors and locals alike to participate in the holiday spirit amidst a true 'winter wonderland'. Prague Christmas markets run daily throughout the festive period. The main markets are at the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, the smaller ones being Namesti Republiky and Havelske Trziste. The Prague Christmas markets consist of rows of garish wooden huts that sell Czech handicrafts, hot food (corn on the cob, sausages and local specialties) and tepid drinks. Outdoor Christmas shopping is easier with a cup of hot wine (svarene vino). Some interesting Christmas stocking fillers can be found in the markets, which reserve a variety of Czech glass, wooden toys, perfumed candles, Christmas tree ornaments, hand-made jewelry and puppets.
Most impressive of all is the Christmas tree from the Sumava Mountains located south of the Czech Republic. Erected in the heart of Old Town Square, the tree is draped in a blaze of lights.
