Christmas is the season of great cheer and festivity. But hardly any Christmas is celebrated without the giving and receiving of Christmas cards. White House Christmas cards tradition began during the Presidency of Calvin Colllidge. The White House Christmas cards are inscribed with the name of the President of America and the cards depict the various pictures of White House and America.
With a big and cheerful “Merry Christmas”, the cards are given to the most distinguished of American people. The White House Christmas cards are sent to the heads of states of other countries as well.
President Truman gave both large and small Christmas cards. The large cards were quite rare and were given to only the Presidential staff members, personal friends and members of the family. The 1961 White House Christmas card was printed with the signatures of John Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy. The card had this inscription at the bottom “With our appreciation and best wishes for a happy Christmas”. 1962 Christmas card from the White House depicted the Red Room in the White House with the printed signatures of President Kennedy and his wife.
President Ronald Reagan continued with the tradition of White House Christmas cards and needless to say, the cards are sent every Christmas by who is then the President. President Reagan had the card titled “Christmas Eve at White House” and it was done from a painting by Jamie Wyeth and reproduced by Hallmark.
