March 17 is celebrated as St. Patrick’s Day in many parts of the world, especially in Ireland. This is a religious holiday and has been named after the renowned Saint Patrick of Irish origin. Originally, this was predominantly a Catholic holiday. Gradually, however it took more secular form and became an integral part of Irish culture.

In modern times, this is regarded as the public holiday in many countries such as Ireland, Labrador, Newfoundland and Montserrat. This day is however is celebrated by the Irish diaspora present in many countries such as United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina.

St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations in Ireland

This is indeed a big festival in Ireland. All the cities and even the small towns of the country virtually wear a festive look on this occasion. The festive celebrations include music, songs, parades, wearing of green dresses, crafts, games, coloring, food and drink. In a nut shell, this is indeed fun time for all the people in the country. Even some communities go one step further by dyeing a river or stream with green color. Various events such as musical events, sports competitions, quizzes, shopping festivals are held on this day.

This is celebrated in big way in some other countries in the world. In the United States this day is being celebrated since the beginning of eighteenth century. In fact, both the Irish as well as the non-Irish in the US, take part in the celebrations. A variety of parades are organized in different parts of the country. Almost all the major cities in the country join in the festivity. Different types of sports events are also organized in the US. In many other countries such as in Argentina, Canada, Great Britain, Montserrat, South Korea, New Zealand and in Japan, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated with fervor and joy.
