Santa Claus as we know him today first emerged when the Dutch settlers came to Manhattan on Christmas day 1624. In Holland, Sinterklaas (Santa Claus) wore a red robe while riding a white horse, and cared a bag of gifts to fill the children's stockings. Christmas Carnivals is here with Year without Santa Claus.

Three years ago my wife and I decided to stop doing Santa. This is the time of year that people find out about our decision, and must know why. There are several reasons really. One is the fact that we no longer wanted to lie to our children. Two, we want our children to realize that it is God that provides us with the ability to give presents, not a fat man in a red suit. Gifts are a blessing not a right. The main reason however is that Christmas is more about Santa than Christ. Ask some body what comes to mind first when they hear Christmas. It usually isn’t Jesus. Christmas is on Sunday this year, and I can’t tell you how many times I have heard people grumble about churches holding services on Christmas day. How dare they expect someone to come to church on Christmas? I can’t control how other households handle the whole Santa thing, but as for me and my house, Christmas will be about The King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
