The music of Christmas forms an integral part of the festival of Christmas. The festive of season of Christmas is filled with the Christmas music. The Russian Christmas Music is a musical piece written by Alfred Reed in the year 1944 for symphonic band.
The Russian Christmas Music can be divided into 4 sections, though it consists of only one movement. The four sections are:
|
Carol Of the Little Russian Children- This is the first section of the musical piece and it is based on a Russian Christmas carol of the 16th century. After a quiet opening by the bells and the tuba (bass horn) the melody is carried out by the clarinets (single reed instruments with a straight tube). It is later joined by the other voices and it concludes with a series of chords. Its lasts for 3 minutes.
- Antiphonal Chat -This forms the second section and it lasts for 2minutes. The trombones, horns, trumpets and cornets carry out the melody. With the help of the woodwinds (woodwind instruments) this section is ended loudly.
- The Village Song – This section makes up the third portion of the Russian Christmas Music and lasts for about 5 minutes. In this portion there are two solos by the Christmas horn, one is the soli (a musical composition for one voice or instrument with or without accompaniment) by the flutes and the other one is the solo by the horns at the end of each.
- Cathedral Chorus – This is the last section of the music and it starts quietly at. the end of the Village Song, but the trombones and the percussion increases the intensity of the song. The music proceeds towards a climax but then recedes for a final chorale. The sounds build up once again and it concludes with a sonorous finale. This section lasts for 5 minutes.
The Russian Music Christmas lasts for 14 to 16 minutes and it was written with the intention of conveying the sounds of the Eastern Orthodox liturgical music that makes use of the human voice.
