Mary, the Sacred Heart, has been depicted often in European art as the compassionate lady, with a serenity that is unparalleled anywhere in any other religious faith. Her image as the mother of Christ, holding the Child in her arms and looking benevolently at her devotees is the humblest protocol of veneration.

Representations of Mary in the Bible and other literature provide important clues of the image of Mary, the most fair to women among all the Evangelists. Certain discourses portray Mary as the first disciple. Luke perceived Mary as a significant role model for all of us. As Francis Maloney (1981) in ‘Women in the New Testament’, asserts that Mary the Mother of Jesus dominates Luke’s account and Joseph assumes a secondary position remaining in the background. Luke focuses on the role of women in the public life of Jesus. In Luke 1-2, Mary is a leader and plays a central role in the scenes from the infancy narrative.
In the illustration of the Sacred Heart of Mary, the Mother of God is a stereotype. Like a doll, Mary points to her heart instead of pointing to Jesus, as in the tradition of the Orthodox Church of the Middle Ages. Connotations associated to Mary in liturgical art are far removed in the representation where Mary’s left hand is blessing us. Her gaze is lost: neither looking at us, to heaven or at Jesus. The representation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary re-signifies the meaning of her love towards humanity by comparing her heart to the natural beauty of a rose. (Mary is the Queen of roses). With her delicate hands, she holds a bunch of flowers, looking slightly above her eye line, which makes her an inspiration for women, yet she floats beyond humanity. The last shows Madonna of the Street. Here Mary is represented as an ordinary woman, protected from the weather, whilst taking her baby home. She is serene and directs her gaze at heaven. Under the holy protection of the mother, the baby sleeps as if it was in heaven.
At some point in our lives or the other, we experience the need of God. It is during moments such as these that the serenity of prayer soothes our souls.
