Easter Pagan History

Easter is believed to have pagan roots and in the ancient times it was considered to be a pagan celebration. Easter has many customs and traditions associated with it. Together Christians and pagans have had a good time in celebrating the idea of death and resurrection. In ancient times the Saxons rejoiced the victory of spring over winter.

Easter comes during the spring season that sets in the perfect mood for all to enjoy after the lengthy bleak winter. The Christians believed the resurrection of Christ to be a sign of rebirth and renewal of life. This was in turn related to the spring season as Easter comes during that time. The pagan history of Easter is connected to the customs and traditions that were a part of the fiesta during the pre- Christian times.

Easter is believed to have evolved even before the origin of Christianity. When we go back to recall the various pagan backgrounds connected to Easter we arrive at a stage to know that there were many gods and goddesses whose passing away and reincarnation represented the loss and renewal of life throughout the spring season. There were several pagan religions that portrayed various gods as becoming extinct and being born. Of all these legends the one concerning the Teutonic goddess of spring is the most famous.

The spring festival of Easter has various legends and myths associated to it. The most acknowledged legend is the one is the origin suggested by St. Bede who was an English scholar of the 8th century. He thought Easter to get its name from the Eostre who was most commonly known as the Anglo Saxon goddesses of spring. The month of April was dedicated to the goddess of spring. The festival was celebrated on the very day of the resurrection of Christ. Gradually Christianity began to grow popularly and the celebration of Easter spread to other countries.
