Christmas tree decoration in Germany started in the middle ages. Legend has it that during harsh cold winters of those days, people in Germany blamed the evil spirits for causing the ill situation when nature would turn white with snow and ice and plants would droop to the ground. Greenery was considered as the symbol of immortality and its gradual death during winters would woe people.
They believed in the special powers of the evergreen trees that could offset the effects of evil spirits. So, they brought the greenery into their homes.
People started bringing holly and pine branches into their homes at the time of Christmas. The green branches were placed in every corner of homes and on windows to keep the evil spirits away. Over time, these trees started acquiring decorative forms in Germany. Earlier it was garlands that added beauty to the Christmas trees. The other decors were exceptionally made of goodies like wafers, cookies and candy.
Later, Christmas tree decoration in Germany also gave rise to the gift-giving custom when little items, like dolls nuts, fiddles and drums, work boxes, needle cases, pen wipes, ribbon, lace and paper chains were hung on the tree.
Now days, Christmas tree decoration in Germany is taking up various fresh forms. It is decorated with stars, floss, glass decors, angels, Santa and the like.
