The basic story of Inuyasha and Kagome revolves around how a Tokyo school girl, named Kagome Higurashi, falls into a covered well in her grandpas' property while attempting to rescue her cat and how the centipede demon in the well mistaking her for a Kikyo, with whom she shares a striking resemblance (a powerful shrine maiden who had died defending the Shikon Jewel or the Jewel of four souls) tries to rob her off her "Jewel of four souls" which she embodies. Events follow and she finds herself in the Sengoku period of Japan where she is informed about her striking similarity to Kikyo by an old miko by the name of Kaede, who relates the whole story of how Kikyo had laid down her life to keep the Jewel of the four Souls from falling into the hands of the evil powers. The story takes a marvelous twist when Kagome realizes herself to be the reincarnation of Kikyo and how she releases Inuyasha, a half demon from his prison on the time-tree Goshinboku so that he can contain the evil spirits from devouring the Jewel of the four souls.
