It has been long while fir trees were brought indoors at
Christmas time in the sixteenth century. The pagans revered these evergreen trees as manifestations of the God because they stayed green and alive when other plants appeared dead and bare in cold winters. Thus, the trees represented everlasting life and hope for the return of spring.
It is said that a Christmas tree was decorated for the first time in 1605. Trees were decorated with flowers made from colored paper, apples, sugar, wafers and the like. The early Christmas trees were also decorated with food items, particularly candies, cookies and wafers.
