Owing to the stupendous success of the song "The Christmas Shoes" by the musical group NewSong, Donna VanLiere was commissioned by the St Martin Press to write a novel based on the touching incident of a young boy's desperation to buy new shoes for his dying mother. Directed by Andy Wolk The Christmas Shoes movie is inspired by both the song and the novel.
The Christmas Shoes movie, like the novel brings us two characters, a successful attorney, Robert Layton, and a small boy, Nathan Andrews, whose mother is on the deathbed. Their chance meeting on the Christmas Eve marks the most important moment of the movie. Christmas has come with a different hue for both of them. Layton, although successful, is not at peace with life as his marriage is on the rocks and he is on the verge of getting separated from his wife and family. For the young boy Christmas is bleak as his mother is dying and he wants to buy her the last Christmas gift, but he has no money. For him the smile on his mother's face means the world to him. It is through the Nathan that that Layton, realizes what Christmas actually is all about. The eight-year-old boy wishes to buy a pair of shoes for his dying mother to make her look beautiful when she meets Jesus. The desperation and anxiety of the young boy for a pair of shoes makes Layton understand the importance of love and family. In this holiday drama, released in 2002 on the television, Rob Lowe features as the attorney Robert Layton, while Max Morrow enacted the role of the young boy Nathan Andrews, with Kimberley Williams as his mother Maggie.
