Christmas Cactus Plants

Sheer thorny delight is here to sweep you off your feet. Christmas Cactus Plants are the in things this season. Buy them to decorate your house or simply pass them off as Christmas showers, cause these amazing plants have rarely failed to enthrall.
If you are wondering whether to gift your near and dear ones with the traditional Poinsettia, Cyclamen or may be settle for a slightly off beat azalea, Christmas begonia, chrysanthemum or a Kalanchoe, we have a solution for you.

Most of us still harbor inhibitions about gifting cactus as holiday plants, leave aside as Christmas showers. But the truth lies in the fact that Christmas cactus symbolizes the advent of Christmasas its little red flowers bloom at this time of the year. But a little thought would probably lead us to the point that many a times a beautifully pruned cactus in full bloom looks far more breathtaking than many of the usual Christmas Plants.

As far as taking care of Christmas cactus is concerned, many are of the opinion that since they are mostly drought resistant, they require less of attention and by virtue of its adaptability and water retaining capacities, they can make good all by themselves without being cared for. But this is an errorous assumption as Christmas cactus is not cactus proper. Though they share most of the traits of cactus, they are relatively more fragile and delicate and a little bit of pruning and time-to-time supervision can do them much good.

Over watering should be strictly avoided but keeping the soil moist is also an essential requisite. Its best to keep the plants in a sunny location indoor but overexposure to sunlight can mar its growth. If the plant is placed on a windowsill, shade is to be provided with the help of glass curtains. Well-drained soil is a mandate and its best to opt for commercially packaged potting mix while an occasional application of a weak solution of liquid houseplant fertilizer every 2 to 3 weeks can also be attempted upon. Bud dropping can be avoided by repotting the plant at regular intervals and also when the soil becomes depleted of nutrients or when excessive root sprouting occurs.
