12 Days of Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve has an interesting history but the traditions of this special day are maintained all over the world. But why is December 24th called “Christmas Eve”? If the history of human civilization shows that, in the very olden days, each day started with sunset. Therefore, the evening of the day, the “eve” happened
first. Then the concept of the day beginning at 12 AM started and the “eve” is evening of the previous day. Therefore “Christmas Eve” is the day before Christmas . 12 Days of Christmas Eve delves into the traditions and customs of Christmas Eve as they are observed in Europe.

On Christmas Eve, the celebrations start on a merry note. 12 Days of Christmas Eve has many fascinating customs and beliefs. Christmas Eve is the time when the supernatural elements like the gnomes, elves and goblins have a free run of the mortal world. They play pranks and must be appeased or else they will do more mischief. The children specially find these characters lovable and fearsome at the same time. Santa Claus appears on Christmas Eve to distribute the presents among good children and the bad children are reprimanded. This is one of the most endearing beliefs of Christmas Eve. 12 Days of Christmas Eve shows many beliefs associated with pagan rituals. Many parts of Europe believe that animals have powers of speech and they can be heard by mortal ears. Needless to say, such belief has given rise to thousands of grim tales about how the domestic animals predicted the fate of their cruel human masters. A happier tale of animals, having human powers of understanding is available too. The belief is that, all cattle rise in their stalls or kneel and adore the new born King. Bees are supposed to assemble on Christmas Eve and hum a Christmas hymn. Connect to Christmas Carnivals for more.
