This is less about having directions to the location than it is a tip to take into account the environment you will be celebrating in. Sure, it’s possible to bring a little bit of formality to the occasion, but look in the mirror and ask “Am I going to be that woman by wearing this?”

2. Consider your fellow attendees
Simply put, think about the people you will be around. Though you aren’t dressing for anyone but yourself, the company you’ll be keeping ought to give you pause. Will you be reveling with some colleagues? Hanging out around the fire with relatives? Spend a few minutes playing out the possibilities if you wear one dress as opposed to the other, especially if you have to work with your fellow partygoers on Monday morning. Wearing a too-revealing outfit is almost as bad as being the person who has too much to drink in the eyes of your fellow employees.

4. Err on the side of caution
Trust your instincts. If there’s any sort of doubt whether you should wear something – like the big green shoes with the curled toes and jingle bells – then step back and consider whether you’re in the right ensemble. You might get a rush of excitement putting on something new (after you’ve lost some weight, for example), but that’s entirely different from the uneasiness you feel when you put on a Christmas dress pushing the limits of tasteful.
