Christmas Cake Customs

Yuletide is every part of the world is observed with tradition and customs. Some rituals are common and yet others are characteristic to individual regions. Christmas Cake Customs around the world are different; but most trace their origin to the traditional porridge. This concoction goes back to the beginning of Christianity. Over the years the fashion of baking cakes came into being. In the olden days i.e. in the 14th century it was the rich who had the pleasure of making these wheatflour delicacies. After all it was the rich who had ovens!

The traditional plum cake traces its origin to the plum porridge. This concoction was made of plums boiled in water with loads of dry fruits and nuts. Later on people made improvisations and added honey and other spices to make the dish special.

The Twelfth Night cake was baked in great homes in the days of the yore. The delicacy was made to mark the end of Yuletide. Most cakes would have a baked in bean and a pea. This was significant. Most guests were given a piece of the cake whoever would get the bean would become the King of Revels and the lady who’d get the pea would become the Queen! In humble dwellings a fruitcake served the purpose.
