Sometimes musical instruments are played as accompaniment to the divine songs. Some of the books of New Testament have records of earliest Christian music which were probably hymns. One of the early hymns, “Awake, awake O sleeper” is still sung in Orthodox Church in the holy instance of baptism. There are certain biblical references to early Christian music like the gospel of Mark and Matthew which tells the story of a song sung by Jesus immediately before he was betrayed. Early church history is strewn with melodies starting from the biblical hymns to the Gregorian hymns. But today we only have the texts of the hymns. The earliest hymn with musical notation was discovered around 3rd century known as Oxyrhynchus hymn.

Byzantine chants are also part of Christian chants and remained with the Christian population of the empire even after its fall and till the rule of the Ottoman Empire.
