Several of the Newport Mansions are decorated for the season in a manner reminiscent of past eras. Clear bulbs are used for illumination to imitate the candles of the bygone eras. An array of historic homes decked out in Christmas finery and glowing lights offers a marvelous view sight to be explored during the holiday times. The Breakers, The Elms and The Marble House are the three historic mansions that remain open during the Christmas time. The Holiday Evenings at these mansions feature live holiday music and elegant refreshments.
Other special Christmas events planned at these three historic homes include visits from Santa Claus, a Christmas Dinner dance at The Breakers, concerts by Elizabeth von Trapp and performances by local musical groups.
In the Astor’s' Beechwood Mansion actors portray the mansion's former occupants and visitors. The "living history" Christmas tours allow visitors to interact with the "characters" while touring the mansion and its fabulous Christmas decorations. At the end of each tour, the cast invites visitors to join in caroling and vintage dances and to have of a warm cup of wassail.
Christmas in Newport started back as a two-week festival that celebrated the noncommercial traditions of the holiday season. The lights of Christmas in Rhode Island, Newport are the brainchild of Ruth Myers who had a desire to recapture the candle lit lightings of the early days.
