Christmas is celebrated worldwide. At the time of the festival of Christmas people, especially in the West decorate their homes with lights, crafts, the Christmas tree and various other decorative items. The indoors as well as the outdoors of the house are decorated along with the streets,

public and commercial buildings. Children as well as adults participate in the activities that are linked to the festival of Christmas in New Mexico.
The most important and the most beautiful aspect of the festival of Christmas in New Mexico is the appearance of luminaries (small lanterns) everywhere. The streets of New Mexico are adorned with these small lanterns or luminaries. The display of luminaries especially at the Old Town of Albuquerque and Santa Fe are a treat to the eyes.
Some of the events associated with the festival of Christmas in New Mexico are:
- Albuquerque, River of Lights- Throughout the whole month of December at the Albuquerque Biological Park thousands of lights twinkles in various themes. The other events that take place in this park are family activities, entertainment, food and crafts; dinner with Santa and dinner with Father Time.
- Albuquerque and Santa Fe: On the eve of Christmas the main plazas of both these cities are adorned with thousands of small lanterns. In the city of Santa Fe carols are sung, cider is served and people in groups make a trip to the Cross of the Martyrs.
- OId Town, Albuquerque: Holiday Shop & Stroll – This event occurs at the beginning of the month of December and it comprises of late closing of shops, free rides between the Old Town and the River of Lights, lighting of the Holiday Tree and a children’s parade with Santa Claus.
