gatherings of friends and feasting.
Christmas in Kansas chronicles the Christmas celebrations of some of the families where the family gatherings have taken place for over 60 years. Still today, all the members of the family come home if that is possible and gifts are placed around the Christmas tree. But in the olden times, the Christmas gifts were placed on and around the family piano in the parlor and they were opened on Christmas Eve. A very good account of Christmas in Kansas can be had from the account of Charles M. Sheldon, a Congregational minister and writer. According to him Christmas was a family and home day. Breakfast table saw the reading of “Everyday Bible” and the dinner was completed with family and friends who were invited. Homemade mince pies were the talk of the table. After dinner, a Christmas story was read and the rest of the day was spent in looking over the Christmas cards and gifts.
Today, Christmas in Kansas is replete with Christmas trees, shopping malls overflowing with Christmas shoppers and other holiday attractions in the cities. Some of the cities have crafts bazaar in the community halls or other open spaces earmarked for this purpose. The bazaars are a noisy affair with food stalls and crafts vendors doing their bit to sell their wares. Log on to
