Christmas In Hawaii |
|
Christmas in Hawaii is a grand rejoice amidst the sunny tropical beaches. The Christmas days are long and warm here and many people from the cold mainland visit Hawaii to spend the holiday time in mirth and merry-making. Hawaiian Christmas is a spectacular celebration marked by Santa's arrival at Waikiki Beach,

Protestant missionaries brought down the tradition of Christmas in Hawaii in the 1820’s though it gained popularity and permanency during the mid Victorian era. In ancient times, the holiday coincided with a traditional Hawaiian festival called Makahiki. This celebration lasted for four months and included great feasts and games.
Today Hawaii's Christmas celebration is a fusion of Hawaiian, Mainland, Japanese, and Chinese customs as Christmas arrives with the Chinese New Year. Christmas celebrations are always a little different in Hawaii. Palm trees are used as Christmas trees. Santa comes riding an outrigger canoe rather than a sleigh, dolphins come in place of reindeer and elves are dressed in aloha shirts. Held at Honolulu Hale (City Hall), "Honolulu City Lights" features a 50-foot Norfolk pine Christmas tree, elaborate lightings, giant Yuletide displays and live entertainment.
Hawaiians take part in some native fun activities termed as Luau to enjoy during the holiday time. Remarkable among them are Makepono Gift Exchange or the Christmas Present game. Hawaiian Reindeer snacks, Mele Kalikimaka Punch and Santa’s hot Ice Cream Float are some exclusive Hawaiian dishes prepared during Christmas.
